Reclaiming the Fragmented Female Body, Inkjet Print on Fabric (2) and mirrors (3), 3x1 m
This body of work explores the female body’s fragmentation and sexualization in media. I am drawn to how women’s bodies are often harshly cropped and commodified, particularly in advertising. As a female artist, I sought to reclaim this objectification by re-staging these images with a softer, more ethereal approach.
Using strategies of appropriation, re-staging, and digital intervention, I created ghostly self-portraits that blend and fragment the female body in a way that challenges the traditional male gaze. I printed these images on large sheets of transparent polyester georgette fabric, draping them to emphasize femininity and delicacy. The fabric’s transparency reveals mirrors behind the images, prompting viewers to reflect on their role in the sexualization of the female form.
Influenced by the work of Francesca Woodman, Gisele Torres, and Tarrah Krajnak, my work disrupts the passive portrayal of women’s bodies, instead presenting them as active, multifaceted, and reclaimed. This installation invites the audience to engage with the complexities of seeing and being seen, questioning the ways in which female bodies are viewed and valued.
